ULAANBAATAR PROFILE

LEGAL AND BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE

  1. Population:
Ulaanbaatar (also spelled Ulan Bator) is the capital and largest city of Mongolia, with a population of approximately 1.6 million people—nearly half of the country’s total population. It is the political, cultural, economic, and transportation hub of Mongolia.

  2. English Prevalence:
While Mongolian is the official language, English proficiency is growing, especially among younger generations and professionals in business, education, and tourism sectors. However, Russian still holds influence, and outside of central business or academic areas, English is not widely spoken. For business dealings, local interpreters or bilingual staff are commonly used.

  3. Major Industries:

  • Mining: The largest contributor to GDP; includes coal, copper, and gold.

  • Construction and Real Estate: Booming due to rapid urbanization.

  • Trade and Retail: Strong domestic and international trade connections (especially with China and Russia).

  • Tourism: Growing, with cultural tourism and eco-tourism being popular.

  • Information Technology: Emerging sector with government support for innovation and startups.

  1. Business and Legal Support:

  • Business Environment:
Mongolia is open to foreign investment, especially in sectors like mining, energy, infrastructure, and agriculture. Ulaanbaatar has seen an increase in foreign-owned businesses and joint ventures.

  • Legal Framework:
The country has a civil law system influenced by continental European models. Business law is relatively well-developed, with foreign investment laws, tax regulations, and company registration processes managed under the General Authority for State Registration.

  • Support Infrastructure:

    • International law firms and consultancies are present, though limited in number.

    • Government agencies such as Invest Mongolia provide guidance for foreign investors.
